Babette Mangolte: A Photo Installation,
PS One, Old Wing Room 204, May 11-28, 1978
The installation tested how we look at photographs, from afar or by touching and how we categorize photographs by subject matter or shapes and sizes.
In 1978 I had an artist studio for a full year at the Clocktower. The result of the work was to build at P.S. One on Long Island City a room inside a room with a fake wall covered with photographs and a small banister separating the wall from an elongated table on which photographs of the size of playing cards were at the disposal of the public.
A “how to do instruction sheet” was at the entrance of the space and solicitated the public to do as they wish with the photo-cards.
